We’d love to have you!

The Weaving Theme

This time around instead of a single weaving pattern, we are using the theme of diamonds. Here’s an episode of A Handwoven Experience to give you some creative ideas.

The OWAL Facebook Group

In order to provide a place for the community to talk about all things “Weave Along”, there is a limited-time Facebook Group called the “Acton Creative October Weave Along”. Simply click over to www.facebook.com/groups/owal2024/ and answer the questions to join!

Oooh, it’s an exciting one – today I’m talking about the curvy, undulating twill!

Imagine twill with its diagonals, but there are curves where the precise geometric lines should be. It’s twill’s audacious cousin! (And p.s., it is really fun and easy to do!)

So please enjoy this week’s episode of A Handwoven Experience all about the curvy undulating twill.

Show Notes –

Undulating Twills, according to Marcy – Have you met Marcy Petrini yet? I had the great pleasure of hanging out with Marcy at the last Convergence in Knoxville. She was in charge of the bus for 2 different day-long tours I participated in. And let me just say that it’s a whole lot of fun, hanging out with Marcy! Not only is she an engaging human being, she’s also wildly knowledgeable on all things weaving. So I was really happy to find that Marcy had created a blog post all about undulating twill that I could share with you! Click here to read her thoughts.

April Weave Along – Did you hear the wonderful news? The April Weave Along is here and we’ll be doing the wonderful undulating twill as our common pattern! (See how I brought that all together?) The April 2024 has wrapped and boy what an incredible month it was! Check out the Gallery Show to see all the amazing projects –

The April 2024 Weave Along is here! Are you ready for a month-long weaving adventure?

Here are the 2 guidelines for the 2024 April Weave Along (AWAL) –

  1. All participants will start and finish a weaving project in the month of April, and
  2. We’ll all use the same pattern – Undulating Twill!

The Weaving Pattern

One of our 2 guidelines for the month is that we’ll do the same pattern, which is undulating twill. Imagine a twill that looks a little tipsy – that’s an undulating twill. It’s a fascinating mix of curves, which is typically pretty challenging to do in weaving. But, we’re making it fun and easy for the April Weave Along! Click here to watch an episode of A Handwoven Experience episode all about undulating twill.

The AWAL Project

There are no restrictions on what you can do for the April Weave Along. The sky is the limit! Just make sure it includes undulating twill and is something you can complete in one month. Otherwise, go crazy!! Anything is fair game. There will be no weaving police watching you. So, go to town, my friend!

Acton Creative Project Materials

However, if the prospect of designing a project feels completely overwhelming, no worries! I’ve created an Acton Creative April Weave Along Kit that is available to you! My project is a table runner in gradations of green, perfect for your spring dining room table.

The Acton Creative kit is sold in 2 parts so you can mix and match. The yarn and the instructions are sold separately.

My fabulous friends at Cotton Clouds will be providing the yarn for the kit! (Thank you, Jodi!) The kit is $39.95 and in it, you’ll receive 4 tubes of green 8/4 cotton. And if green isn’t your jam, you can select blues, purples, or even make up your own!

Just click here to order your kit materials today.

Acton Creative Project Instructions

The Acton Creative kit is sold in 2 parts so you can mix and match. The yarn and the instructions are sold separately.

Because you can order the instructions and yarn separately, you can simply use what you have on the shelf and purchase just the instructions. And to accomodate all the fabulous beginners, we have options for the multi-shaft weavers, as well as the rigid heddle weavers!

The amazing Michele Marshall took the official Acton Creative project and translated it for the rigid heddle loom! She has provided us with a set of clear, concise instructions, perfect for the weaver who would prefer to work on the rigid heddle. And if you want extra support, you can choose the option with not only the .pdf instructions, but also video tips to help you see the process clearly.

So, this is the best kind of choose-your-own-adventure! Select which loom you want to work on (multi-shaft or rigid heddle), and then click on the link to order your instructions, either as a downloadable .pdf, or as a bundle with both the instructions and the video tips.

4-Shaft (Multi-shaft) Loom

AWAL 4-Shaft Instructions Only: You’ll receive a thorough, downloadable .pdf that will include all your dimensions/numbers, the pattern with how to weave the project, and details about how to finish it. FAQ’s

Is everything included in the kit from Cotton Clouds? All the yarn you’ll need (and then some!) is included in the kit. However, please note that the instructions are sold separately. This will give you lots of options if you’d like to use one, but not the other. (See the notes above for more about the instructions.)

What width loom do I need for the Acton Creative Weave Along Project? The project is set at 13″ wide in the reed for a 4-shaft loom and 13.75″ wide for the rigid heddle loom. However, if you want to make it wider or narrower, it is simple to repeat or cut out a few inches to your desired width.

Can I use my own yarn for the Acton Creative Weave Along Project? You absolutely may use your own yarn! It would be beautiful in all sorts of colors and textures. The project is designed for 8/4 cotton, but you can easily substitute that with another fiber.

I want to participate, but don’t do Facebook. I get it! And that is absolutely no barrier for participating in the April Weave Along! Each Monday in the month of April, I will release a new video giving you your homework for the week in order to stay on target to finish your project before the 30th. Work steadily on your undulating twill project at home and please send me a photo once you have completed it! I would love to include you in the final Gallery Show.

What if I get stuck during the project? You have options, my friend! First of all, there is an entire Facebook group of weavers all going through the same thing. So, reach out and ask for some feedback/suggestions/answers. It’s a fabulous and generous group who will run to your rescue, I promise! However, if you want to do things more privately, you are always welcome to reach out to me directly at chris@actoncreative.net. I LOVE connecting with other weavers and will do my darnedest to help you out of your pickle!

How do I share my progress and the finished project? Please post photos of your progress and the finished project in the Facebook group. I will pull together a parade of projects at the end of the month so we can all ooh and ahh over our weaving brilliance! If you choose not to participate in the Facebook group, you are welcome to share your project with me at chris@actoncreative.net.

What if there’s already a project on my loom and it won’t be empty in time to participate? First of all, I love that you are working steadily on a weaving project! Yay you! While you may not be in a position to weave along, there is still value in participating in the Facebook Group. You never know what information you might learn or connections you’ll make. We’d love to have you!

Happy Weaving!

I’m so excited to share this weaving adventure with you, during the month of April! My hope is that this experience will spark lots of project and weaving ideas for the future, plus introduce you to a few new weaving friends online! Cheers to you & our month-long weaving adventure! Happy Weaving!! – Chris

In today’s episode of A Handwoven Experience, I’m bringing you 5 facts about shadow weave. This fascinating, slightly mysterious pattern is the focus of our 2023 October Weave Along and I’m excited to shed some light on its personality!

My hope is that you’ll be just as intrigued by it as I am! I can’t wait to see what you do with your shadow weave projects!

Show Notes –

Shadow Weave in Handwoven – Without fail, the blog posts on the Handwoven Magazine site are some of the best references online. And the topic of shadow weave was no exception! Please enjoy their article, “All You Need for Shadow Weave”.

Color & Weave – You’ll notice that during the video I brought up the idea of “color & weave”. Well, you’re in luck! Last week’s episode tackled that precise topic. Here is the link to learn more about color & weave.

October Weave Along

The October Weave Along is right around the corner! I hope you’ll join us for this month-long weaving adventure. There are just 2 guidelines – we all start & finish a project in the month of October, and we all do the same pattern (this time around it’s shadow weave!).

If you’d like to hear more about the program, there is a Weave Along Central page with all the details! Simply click here to order your kit, learn about our special donation, and find out when the official Facebook Group opens. Happy Weaving!

(The October 2023 Weave Along is over and boy, did we have a great time! Feel free to peruse our fabulous Gallery Show to see all the wonderful shadow weave projects!)

(Below is the Weave Along Central page where the entire program is laid out.)

The October 2023 Weave Along is here! Are you ready for a month-long weaving adventure?

Here are the 2 guidelines for the 2023 October Weave Along (OWAL) –

  1. All participants will start and finish a weaving project in the month of October, and
  2. We’ll all use the same pattern – Shadow Weave!

And this October, we’re doing something really special!

10% of the sales of the October Weave Along Instructions (all of them are included) and the Cotton Clouds kit in pink/brown will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! If you would like to see more about this important organization and make your own donation, just click here.

October Weave Along Group

To help us stay on track and connect with each other throughout the process, I’ve set up a Facebook group specifically for us! The group will be a safe space for us to show our work, ask questions, support each other, and find inspiration. The doors are open! Click here to join, or search under “OWAL2023” in the Facebook Groups.

October Weave Along Pattern

One of our 2 guidelines for the month is that we’ll do the same pattern, which is shadow weave. This fascinating pattern is typically a variation on twill or overshot. Click here to see the episode of A Handwoven Experience with a great overview of shadow weave!

October Weave Along Project

There are no restrictions on what you can do for the October Weave Along. The sky is the limit! Just make sure it includes shadow weave and is something you can complete in one month. Otherwise, go crazy!! Anything is fair game. There will be no weaving police watching you. So, go to town, my friend!

October Weave Along Project Kit Materials

However, if the prospect of designing a project feels completely overwhelming, no worries! I’ve created an Acton Creative October Weave Along Kit that is available to you! My project is a set of 2 towels in pinks and browns, perfect for a cherished spot in your kitchen or bathroom.

My fabulous friends at Cotton Clouds will be providing the yarn for the kit! (Thank you, Jodi!) The kit is $39.95 and in it, you’ll receive 4 tubes of 8/2 cotton – 2 pinks, and 2 browns.

Just click here to order your kit materials today.

October Weave Along Project Kit Instructions

Please note that the project instructions are sold separately from the yarn. This will allow you to easily insert your own yarn, but not worry about making up your own project! And this year, we’re adding to the experience by offering not only instructions for your multi-shaft loom, but also instructions for your rigid heddle loom!

The amazing Michele Marshall took the official Acton Creative project and translated it for the rigid heddle loom! She has provided us with a set of clear, concise instructions, perfect for the weaver who would prefer to work on the rigid heddle.

So, this is the best kind of choose-your-own-adventure! Select which loom you want to work on, and then click on the link to order your instructions.

4-Shaft (Multi-shaft) Loom

OWAL 4-Shaft Instructions Only: You’ll receive a thorough, downloadable .pdf that will include all your dimensions/numbers, the pattern with how to weave the project, and details about how to finish it. (The kit does not include details on how to dress your loom. It is tailored to this project, only.) Just a reminder that the instructions are for a 4-shaft loom. Click here to get your 4-shaft instructions for $15!

OR,

OWAL 4-Shaft Instruction PLUS Bonus Tips: You’ll receive the .pdf and more! I’ve recorded a 40-minute video to help you through some of the key stages of the project. So, if you are a visual learner, this is a fabulous option! Just a reminder that the instructions and videos are geared towards a 4-shaft loom. Click here to get your 4-shaft instructions and so much more for $25!

Are you ready to talk about a broken twill threading? Me, too! Let’s do it.

When you hear a weaver talk about a “threading”, it refers to the sequence you use to assign the warp yarns to a shaft. You’ve heard me many a time discuss “threading the heddles”, which is the action, while a “threading” is the sequence.

For me, I tend to approach a threading in a visual manner, like you’re a bird looking down on the loom. (Total sidebar: if you truly have a bird looking down on your loom, please stop what you’re doing and kindly escort her out!)

In this episode, I’ll be sharing my approach to this step, AND of course, walking you through the fabulous broken twill threading. It’s a good one! Enjoy!

Show Notes –

Twill Glossary – Oooooh, I found a great resource for you! In Handwoven magazine, they shared a wonderful twill glossary that includes all sorts of variations, including our broken twill threading! Some were even new to me! I’ll definitely be studying it further right after I finish this post. Click here to see what the excitement’s about.

Straight Draw – Back at episode 57, I introduced you to the Famous Straight Draw. And the truth is, you could easily dress your loom using a straight draw for the rest of your life and never get bored! If you’d like a refresher on this sturdy workhorse of a threading, here is your review of the straight draw.

Point Twill Threading – The other threading I refer to in our current episode is the wonderful point twill threading. I featured this one in episode 111, which was a great lead-in to waffle weave! Click here to see what the point twill threading is all about!
