Tartans, plaids. Plaids, tartans. They’re the same, right? Wrong! This week on A Handwoven Experience I sit down with the fabulous Caryl Bohn to discover the key differences between “Tartans vs. Plaids”.

Caryl is a tartan expert. Not only has she woven more than she can count, she has designed and registered several herself. So I knew that there is no one better than Caryl to help me understand what makes a tartan, a tartan. Join us as we explore the amazing world of tartans and plaids. May it inspire you to try weaving a tartan (or two!). Happy weaving!

Tartans vs. Plaids

Show Notes

One of my favorite things about weaving is learning from and collaborating with other weavers. Which is why I host Live at the Loom each week on YouTube. During this livestream weavers from around the world gather to share their stories. Click here to learn more and to join us!

The Scottish Register of Tartans is THE resource for tartan patterns. Click here to learn more about tartans and check out all of the patterns registered so far (including Caryl’s!).

Are you ready for a charming, informative, and inspiring video? You ask and I will deliver – it’s A Handwoven Interview with Fiber Artist Supply Co.!

Timothy and Cynthia Hale are the owners of this Cincinnati-based company where they are creating fiber tools of all kinds (including their famous ball-winders), as well as Woolhouse table looms.

Hearing Tim’s story of randomly designing fiber-related tools, and then having a weaver specifically tell him he must go make looms (we are bossy!) is completely relatable! Life is simply like that, isn’t it? You never quite know where you’ll land.

But we’re thrilled this couple has ended up in our corner of the fiber world because they are accomplishing really great things. Please enjoy this episode of A Handwoven Interview with Fiber Artist Supply Co.!

Show Notes –

Chicago Weaving School – Tim mentioned his important connection to Natalie Boyett and the Chicago Weaving School, where she’s using Woolhouse looms on a daily basis. If you aren’t familiar with this magical place, be sure to check out her website right here.

Steal Like an Artist – During our discussion, we talked about the way new beautiful things come to be – mostly by starting with inspiration from other people. I highly recommend this short, impactful book by Austin Kleon to get the creative juices flowing!

WARP Annual Meeting – You’ll be able to meet Timothy and Cynthia in person at the Weave a Real Peace 2023 Annual Meeting in Kent, Ohio July 13-16. Please click here to see more information.

Convergence Conference – The Handweaver’s Guild of America will host their national fiber conference in Witchita, Kansas on July 11-17, 2024. This major fiber event will include international instructors, incredible exhibits, wonderful local tours, and much more. Fiber Artist Supply Co. will be participating in the marketplace (aka weaving nirvana). Here’s the HGA link to learn more about next year’s event.

Table Looms – We talk a lot about table looms in this episode. And while my table loom isn’t a Woolhouse (not yet!), I am happy to give you a tour so you can see how it functions. Please enjoy episode 24!

There were a number of people referenced during A Handwoven Interview with Amanda Baxter, and I did my best to capture their information. Here they are!

Jean Haley – Jean is Amanda’s studio mate and natural dyer. Click here to find her.

Additional Show Notes –

The Story of Shiny Dime – During our interview, Amanda touched on the impact of losing her sister at a young age. But, to hear the full, poignant story, you really need to read her blog post. It packs a punch, my friend. I’d suggest finding the tissues. Take it all in right here.

AVL Looms – AVL Looms is a company that creates dobby looms. They combine handweaving and technology to allow weavers to easily tackle wildly complex patterns. This link will zip you over to their website so you can see more.

Reuseable zip ties – This is what Amanda suggested as a great way to keep your yarn organized while dyeing it. (I trust you can find these near you!)

I can’t WAIT for you to meet my very special guest in the first episode of A Handwoven Interview, with Ellen Grenier-Bevill!

You may be asking, “Wait – what is A Handwoven Interview?” It’s new! I’ve been rolling around the idea of highlighting the many fabulous weavers I know and introducing them to you!

Why, you ask? Well, weaving is a big category. Huge! And what I’ve found is that every weaver is different. What do they like to make? What materials do they enjoy working with? How do they approach each project? There are so many variables.

So while I cater to one specific set of interests and ideas, the weaver next to me likes something completely different. And isn’t that amazing?

Thus, A Handwoven Interview was born! I can think of no better person to kick it off than Ellen Grenier-Bevill. I sincerely hope that you enjoy every bit of our conversation.

Show Notes –

Where to find Ellen – You can keep up with Ellen’s colorful life and business on Facebook and Instagram under “ThreadingsHandwoven”, and order all her magnificent creations on her website at threadingshandwovendesigns.com.

Turned Taquete – I’ll be honest, I know the bare minimum about turned taquete. That’s what I have Ellen for – ha! But it did come up in our conversation, so I want to be sure you have access to more information if you are interested. Check out this blog post from Denise Kovnat all about this unique pattern.
