After work today, I attended a Duneland Chamber of Commerce function. Now, from the time I got dresed this morning, I’ve been twirly about this – don’t have the right clothes, I have to let the dog out so I might be late, who will I know there, etc. So I wasn’t completely sold on it. But I had paid my money and I was determined to go and have a good time, damnit!
I pulled up a little late, got out of my car, and lo & behold, my friend Darlene parked right behind me! Yay, I know someone! She confessed that she wasn’t exactly in the mood for this either. But, we agree to muddle through together!
Even though we were originally assigned to different tables, the organizers caved to our puppy dog looks and put us together at table 11. Darlene bought me a drink (thank you, my friend!), and we ventured into the mix. We worked the perimeter of the room (this translates to about 15-25% of the attendees) and found our table.
There was a short business meeting that wrapped up before desert was served, which left us some time to network/chat/connect. Darlene & I ended up in a lovely conversation, just catching up! It was so fun!
But I had to chuckle that our big ‘ole introverted personalities were showing! Happy to sit and chat with a friendly face instead of feeling the need to talk to every person in attendance – that was us!
I was in a great mood by the time I left! Clearly, all I needed from the event was to find a kindred spirit who was in the same mood as me. Sometimes, life gives you exactly what you need!
How are you at these kinds of events? Can’t wait to meet everyone? Dread them, but go anyway? Don’t even consider it?
p.s. I don’t have a particularly appropriate image for this post, so I offer up a photo of our wildly blooming Christmas catus!
